1866 Transitional, No Motto Pattern Dollar PR J-540 Values

Details

1866 Silver Dollar. Not a pattern, but a mule created at a later date as a numismatic rarity. Only two 1866 “No Motto” Liberty Seated dollars are known to exist. These special coins are identical to the regular silver dollars of 1866 except for one small detail that might easily be overlooked: there is no scroll with IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle on the reverse. The motto was added to the reverse of most U.S. coins in 1866, including the silver dollar, following five years of development. This coin is part of our trio of No Motto 1866 silver coins, except that two specimens are known of the silver dollar, whereas only one each is known for the half dollar and quarter dollar.

Obverse: Regular Liberty Seated die of the year.

Reverse: Regular Liberty Seated die of the type before 1866, without motto.
