1880-CC 8/High 7 One Dollar MS Values
Details
Featuring the reverse style (rounded breast) of 1879, this popular overdate is distinguished from its Low 7 counterpart by looking for where traces of the 7 are to be found in and around the second 8 of the date. With the High 7, the horizontal bar of the ghostlike 7 can be seen within the top half of the upper loop in the 8, with only a tiny notch visible under the bottom loop of that same 8. This is a very scarce variety in all grades and particularly so above MS66, in which case it is rare. PLs and DMPLs are rare in all grades and very rare in the Gem range, commanding huge premiums across the MS spectrum.
Obverse: Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse: The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.
