1913-D Buffalo Nickel, Type 2 MS Values
Details
The 1913-D Type 2 Buffalo nickel is a scarce key-date coin, with far fewer available examples than the issue’s mintage figure may suggest. While 4,156,000 examples were minted, experts believe perhaps only 10,000 exist across all grades, and fewer than 20% of those in uncirculated grades. As was typical for the period, few mintmarked specimens were saved by the collectors, and is challenging to find in decent circulated grades. However, in uncirculated grades the coin is about as rare as many other early mintmarked Buffalo nickels and is generally found well struck.
Obverse: James Earle Fraser's famous and simple design depicts a Native American chief with the word LIBERTY from 1-2 o'clock. The date is placed on the lower left of the chieftain's bust.
Reverse: A full portrait of the bison, Black Diamond, with the words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at the top periphery with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM just underneath. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out at the bottom. For the Type 1, the denomination is embossed on a flat surface.
