Popular commemorative issue celebrating the opening of the southern railroad. It is recorded that 100,000 pieces were melted to be used for the 1968 Mexican Olympic 25 Pesos

Obverse: Slightly above center, above a spray of oak and laurel, a small national coat of arms depicting the eagle in profile to the left, with stylized, leaf-like feathers and very large feet. The legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS surrounds, with CINCO PESOS below the spray. To the left of the spray, fineness LEY / 0.720; to the right of the spray, PESO above the coin’s weight (in grams), 27 7/9 6. At the bottom, the mintmark Mo and the date.

Reverse: A complex scene with a locomotive in the foreground and, in the background, a plantation scene with a forest, fields, and two palm trees. Behind all, a rising sun with blade-shaped rays, and with 1950 inscribed on the half-circle. Surrounding all, the legend INAUGURACION DEL FERROCARRIL DEL SURESTE ! (“Inauguration of the Southeastern Railway”).
