(1837-42) C. Bechtler One Dollar Gold MS N Reversed, K-4 Values

Details

The Kagin-4, N Reversed gold dollar is widely referred to as a blundered die, when it is perhaps more accurately understood as a blundered punch, as the N punch itself was cut backwards. Like the Kagin-Transitional half eagle and the pill-style quarter eagles, the N Reversed dollar lacks an initial next to BECHTLER. While it has been suggested that this issue was intended as a bridge between the production of Christopher Bechtler and that of August, it seems far more likely that this is an attempt to save space on these small dies. The Kagin-4 is readily available, with more than 100 known examples. Four or five choice uncirculated N Reversed dollars vie for finest known honors.
