In 1898, the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) was established in Cairo by the merger of three firms: Cassel of London, Salvago of Alexandria, and Suarés of Cairo. The NBE was granted the exclusive right to issue notes in Egypt for 50 years. Notes were issued for the first time on 3 April 1899 by decree of 25 June 1898.
