In 1838, the Southern District Banking Company of Newport, Isle of Wight was founded with a branch in Guernsey, over the Harris’ Grocery and Wine business. The bank failed in 1840 and was acquired by the Hampshire Banking Company, which eventually became the Capital and Counties Bank (established on 27 August 1887), itself absorbed by Lloyds Bank in 1920.
