At the time, New Zealand was divided into self-governing provinces, and the bank eventually opened branches of issue in each district capital of the seven major provinces: Christchurch and Invercargill (December 1874), Wellington (January 1875), Napier (May 1875), Auckland (June 1875), and Nelson (March 1877).
