In 1842, the Bank of Western India was founded in Bombay, India. In 1845, following the opening of a branch in Ceylon, the bank was renamed the Oriental Bank. On 30 August 1851, the Oriental Bank Corporation (ORI) obtained a royal charter with the right to open branches and issue notes east of the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

In August 1857, the bank opened its first New Zealand branch in Auckland. Branches were later opened in Dunedin (July 1860), Invercargill (April 1861), Wanganui (March 1859), and Wellington (September 1857), with plans for Christchurch.
