History and Overview No patterns are known bearing dates 1841 through 1845. Examples described as patterns in certain earlier texts and catalogs have proven to be early counterfeits of circulating coins, sometimes from crude dies, made for deception in the channels of commerce (not for numismatic purposes). Collecting Perspective With the date 1846, a curious piece exists about the diameter of a quarter eagle, with the obverse and reverse of an 1846 die pair, but then with the reverse additionally overstruck with an 1846 half eagle die.
